The HF Bar is certainly worthy of a return visit. On the other hand, we all slept well, probably because we were worn out from all the riding and other activities. In some cases, the beds had no box springs. Each of the three cabins that we occupied needed new mattresses. Accommodations are rustic and in need of some repair. Service of all kinds was friendly and outstanding. So, visiting is like joining a happy family. And many of the ranch hands had visited as children with their families. I am told that on a normal week 75% of the guests are returning from previous visits. We had three vegetarian members of our group and they occasionally had difficulty finding meal options. Three meals a day are included and we found the food satisfactory. The scenery, on the eastern edge of the Bighorn National Forest, is spectacular. Non riding activities include fly fishing, skeet shooting, hiking, mountain biking and a kids camp for the little ones. Normal rides are scheduled in the mornings and evenings, leaving the afternoon open. This ranch is children friendly with riding schedules that fit everyone's ability. We have been to another dude ranch and therefore have some basis of comparison. Our thirteen member family spent a week playing, communicating and relaxing at the ranch. Horse roundups occur twice a day, sunrises are stellar. Make sure you meet Margie, the owner and experience their new bar! HF Bar is a bucket list Guest Ranch! It is a photographers dream. If you are looking for quiet, clear sky star gazing, great cabins, classic ambiance, awesome horses and awesome riding to match, this is the place! Must do rides are Monument Rock and Gingers meadow!. If you looking for plush accommodations, spas, wi-fi extravaganzas, TV entertainment, this is not the place. This is the kind of place that you must experience. The deliver ice to you outside classic style Ice box everyday. The cabins are quaint, decorated with antiques and very comfortable. The wrangling staff makes sure you experience the type of riding you want and numerous stellar locations both day and evening riding. Awesome food, super good dining rock star (chefs, cooks and hashers) and the best wrangling staff facilitating the daily riding. The mainstay of offering is the guest service experienced there. As was the first visit, our time there was awesome. The last week of August 2017 was my second stay at the HF Bar Ranch. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you already know how strange living in 2020 has been. After John Hodgson published the final portion of his History of Northumberland in 1840, it became generally accepted that the Wall and Vallum had been built during the reign of Hadrian. In the central sector the Wall runs along the top of the crags of the Whin Sill, while the Vallum, laid out in long straight stretches, lies in the valley below to the south, as much as 700 metres (2,300 ft) away.īefore the middle of the 19th century, the Vallum was most commonly known as Agricola's Ditch, since antiquarians wrongly thought that it had been constructed during the period when Agricola was Governor of Britannia, the Roman province spanning what is now England, Wales and southern Scotland. In general there was a preference for the earthwork to run close to the rear of the Wall where topography allowed. The distance of the Vallum from the Wall varies. In several places – for example at Heddon-on-the-Wall and Limestone Corner – the Vallum was cut through solid rock, sometimes for lengthy distances. The total width of the fortification (consisting, from north to south, of mound, berm, ditch, marginal mound, berm, mound) was thus about 36 metres (100 ft). For a great deal of its length a third lower mound, the so-called marginal mound occupies the south berm (flat area between mound and ditch), right on the southern lip of the ditch. The Vallum comprises a ditch, nominally 6 metres (20 ft) wide and 3 metres (10 ft) deep, with a flat bottom, flanked by two mounds about 6 metres wide and 2 metres (7 ft) high, set back some 9 metres (30 ft) from the ditch edges. In fact all these elements date to Hadrian's reign, with the stone wall having been built first. It was long thought that the Vallum predated the stone wall, whose most elaborate phasing was presented in 1801 by William Hutton, who thought, wrongly, that the south vallum mound and the marginal mound, with a ditch between, were the work of Agricola, that the vallum ditch and north mound were added by Hadrian, and that the stone wall was the work of Severus. The earliest surviving mention of the earthwork is by Bede ( Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum, I.12), who refers to a vallum, or earthen rampart, as distinct from the wall, or murus the term is still used despite the fact that the essential element is a ditch, or fossa. Unique on any Roman frontier, it runs practically from coast to coast to the south of the wall. The Vallum is a huge earthwork associated with Hadrian's Wall in England. Thus there is a lot of room for variation in the areas of damage. As the diagram illustrates above, the vestibular nucleus which extends from lower pons into medulla, is also a big target because of it's length. It is about 3 cm in length and 2cm in greatest diameter, and is a big target. The medulla is the portion of the brainstem just below the pons (recognized by cerebellar peduncles), and the first cervical spinal nerve (C1). PICA is also the most common site of occlusion from propagating thrombus or embolism caused by injury to the third section of the vertebral artery, and Wallenberg's syndrome is the most common stroke caused by chiropractic manipulation (Caplan, 1986). Of these strokes, while dissection causes 15% (Kim, 2003). Because of the far more common origin from the vertebral artery, most "PICA" syndrome strokes actually areĭue to vertebral artery occlusion (Kim 2003). PICA may arise from the vertebral artery (the usual case), or as a separate branch of the basilarĪrtery. Usually LMS/Wallenberg's is caused by loss of blood flow in the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA). Source of figure: what-when-how neuroscience. The "VN" is the inferior vestibular nucleus, more commonly labeled as either DVN or IVN. SVN,LVN,MVN are the superior, lateral and medial vestibular nuclei. It both supplies the medulla as well as the inferior cerebellum.Ĭentral vestibular pathways, drawn from back of brainstem with cerebellum removed. PICA is usually a branch of the vertebral artery. What causes Wallenberg's/Lateral Medullary syndrome ? Hearing symptoms are generally from strokes in the territory of he next higher artery in the brainstem, the anterior inferior cerebellar artery or AICA. LMS generally does not include hearing symptoms however. Opposite side weakness (Babinski-Nageotte) Sympathetic connections descending from hypothalmus into cervical cord. These were divided up into the upper group (rostral) and the more common lower group (caudal). Kim (2003) provided a table including 18 symptoms (or categories) of symptoms. In addition, there are a lot of important structures supplied by PICA, and depending where the damage lies, there may be other findings. With LMS almost always have a Horner's syndrome (acutely unilateral ptosis, miosis and facial anhidrosis), but partial Wallenberg's are more the rule than the exception. Very well and often resume their previous activities (Nelles et al, 1998). Hemiataxia, dysarthria, ptosis and miosis. Or "Wallenberg's syndrome", after Wallenberg's description in 1895. The PICAstroke syndrome is also known as "lateral medullary syndrome", PICA (posterior cerebellar artery syndrome). Unfortunately, this isn’t being talked about much in the UK, so no brands appear to be testing or removing 1,4 dioxane. It is not biodegradable, persists in the environment, and ends up in the food chain.Ĭurrently, EU Ecocert will permit ethoxylated ingredients under its “natural” certification until there are better alternatives on the market. Unless tested for and removed, 1,4 dioxin can end up contaminating the final product. Well, the process produces a carcinogenic substance called 1,4 dioxin. SLES is used in many eco products because it is cheap and mild. The process of ethoxylation makes an ingredient less irritating to your skin. For example, when sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) gets ethoxylated, it becomes Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES). The detergents in the category have great ethics and have only been marked down because they contain ethoxylated ingredients. If you are an eco company and want to be featured, send me an email. NOTE: If there is an eco brand missing from this list, it is because they wouldn’t disclose their surfactants to me (or I haven’t had time to email them yet). Is the manufacturing local to reduce the carbon footprint? Is it vegan or cruelty-free? Sustainably Lazy will never recommend products with ingredients that have been tested on animals. What makes laundry detergent eco-friendly?Īs “eco-friendly” is an unregulated term, it seems fair that I tell you what factors I’m looking at when deciding which laundry detergents are the most sustainable.ĭo they use surfactants from petrochemical sources or plants, like coconut, corn, sugarcane or palm oil?Īre they palm oil free? If their suppliers sometimes substitute palm derivatives, is the palm oil certified by the RSPO?ĭoes the detergent contain microplastics or liquid polymers (like acrylic copolymer/ PET)? Like plastic, liquid polymers are non-biodegradableĭoes the brand offer a refill or reuse service to reduce plastic packaging and waste? Liquid polymers were unfortunately not included in the microbead ban, and do not fall under the biodegradability rule like surfactants (according to Code Check).Ģ. If an ingredient can biodegrade when oxygen is present it can be labelled readily biodegradable.Īcrylic copolymer dissolves in water but is often referred to as a liquid microplastic due to its poor biodegradability. It is derived from crude oil and is not anaerobically biodegradable (which means it will not biodegrade unless oxygen is present).Ĭurrently, the EU does not require surfactants to be anaerobically biodegradable, even though oxygen isn’t present in wastewater treatment and UK water companies dump untreated wastewater straight into the sea. This is the main surfactant used by the detergent industry. More information about ingredients to avoid ✅ Vegan enzymes in bio detergent have no negative impact on the environment This is typically a petroleum derivative, however, it can now be derived from plant sources. ❌Propylene glycol (PEG) with no information about sourcing. ✅Fragrances that are free from phthalates They do not biodegrade and can be found in rivers where they are harmful to fish and aquatic plants, like algae. ❌An optical brightener is a light-reflecting chemical that gives the illusion of whiteness on your clothing. ✅No palm oil, or sustainable palm oil with a solid policy ❌ Ingredients derived from petroleum, like Alkylbenzene Sulfonates, acrylic copolymer, and PET. ✅ Ingredients derived from plants, like coconut and sugarcane. Read on to find out which laundry detergent brands in the UK are the most eco-friendly and which companies didn’t make the cut. I have read the ingredients lists and sustainable credentials of every brand listed here and put them into three categories: Sustainable cleaning brands use surfactants that come from plants, like coconut, instead. These are fossil fuels which are the main contributor to climate change and cause a devastating amount of pollution. The problem with ingredients is that the majority of surfactants (which remove dirt from clothes in water) are derived from petrochemicals. Like in August 2022 when Persil’s detergent advert was banned for saying it was “kinder to the planet” without any being able to provide any evidence of this. Greenwashing is when a brand pretends to be more sustainable than it is. This makes it super easy for companies to fool you. Would you believe that cleaning brands are allowed to keep the ingredients a secret in the UK? The ingredients look like something only a scientist can read… and that’s if they even share it with you. Figuring out which laundry detergents are eco-friendly can be tricky. |
